The natures of the crystalline and amorphous phases have been studied in poly(tetramethylene oxide), and to a lesser degree in poly(ethylene oxide) by a combination of techniques including small angle X-ray scattering, differential thermal analysis, wide angle X-ray scattering and dilatometry. The small angle X-ray scattering technique has been based on the correlation function approach thereby enabling, in the case of poly(tetramethylene oxide), the determination of the amorphous and crystalline thicknesses and their distributions, the individual phase densities and the interphase boundary layer thickness for a variety of crystallisation conditions.
