The construction and subsequent performance of a system to cool liquid 3He into the superfluid phases by the technique of nuclear refrigeration of copper are described together with the results of preliminary experiments on the self-cooling of a copper nuclear refrigeration stage. The textures of superfluid He3-A occurring within 2 pm diameter cylinders have been investigated using continuous wave, longitudinal and transverse, nuclear magnetic resonance (NAIR) techniques with the applied static field either parallel or perpendicular to the cylinder axis. In these experiments the Hei is confined to an array of parallel glass capillaries of approximately circular cross-section. The aim is to test the theoretical predictions of the equilibrium texture and the existing theories of the NAIR response of inhomogeneous textures. The results are at variance with theoretical prediction and there is evidence of a transition between two textures formed within the cylinders. In addition, measurements have been made on the NMR properties of bulk superfluid He3-A as a function of pressure and on the enhanced susceptibility associated with the surface layers of He3 confined within the array of cylinders
