Abstract:
In contrast to other studies of the rural communities of the Peruvian Andes and other parts of Latin America which tend to give a view of these societies either as a collection of unrelated institutions of different cultural origins or as mechanical organisms whose parts are integrated due to the pressure of external forces, this thesis attempts to give an image of an Andean society in terms of the categories which are significant to the actors and to disclose the structural tendencies which clearly underly its social organization.
