Abstract: | |||||
Poetry competition (uta-awase) is a literary game in which
two poems, written on a particular topic are judged as to their
relative merit by one or more judges. This unique literary game
can be traced back to the late 9th century when it was practised
by the emperor and court-nobles. It continued until the early 20th
century gaining sporadic but ardent enthusiasm among people of
all classes.
