This thesis is concerned with the effect of H-bonding on properties and morphology in block co-polyurethane elastomers. Several series of co-polyurethanes are prepared and also come N-substituted urethane model compounds are studied. A general introduction to the chemistry and properties of polyurethanes, hydrogen bonding and the methods used in studying hydrogen bonding systems is given. After describing the preparation and characterisation of the carbamate and related model compounds, the hydrogen bonding phenomena in solution of these systems are studied in details by infra-red, NMR and adiabatic calorimeter. The methods and conditions used for polymer sythesis are described and the products are examined by infra-red spectroscopy and other polymer characterisation techniques. The results obtained in this work are discussed and explanations are proposed for the various findings. Suggestions are also made for further work in this field of study..
