Abstract:
This thesis reports a study of the effects of powdery mildew infection on the growth and development of Senecio vulgaris L. with a view to finding the extent to which host plants in wild populations can tolerate the activities of organisms parasitic on them. The causal organism of the groundsel powdery mildew has been tentatively identified as a member of the compound species, Tilrysiphe igichoracearum DC ex Herat, on the basis of its characteristics at the asexual stage. The ranges of the environmental conditions of temperature and humidity that permit the growth of the fungus were determined as a preliminary to infection studies.
