This study is an ethnography of the life world of one group of male collegiate football players. Utilising traditional ethnographic methods of participant observation and semi-structured interviews the author explores the individual and collective experiences of university football of undergraduate male students. Employing pro-feminist assumptions and Gramsci's (1971) concept of hegemony to underpin the overall analysis, the study describes the structures, practices and rituals that shape the men's identities in the collegiate football milieu, and locates this analysis within the broader context of structures of gendered power. In doing so, the author engages with the complexities and contradictions inherent to men's experiences of maleness, and the interplay of numerous, conflicted forms of masculinity are considered and depicted.
