This dissertation is a compendious study of George Dibdin pitt's life and work. While the emphasis has been on offering a balanced view of Dibdin Pitt's contributions to theatre and literature, I have also chosen to highlight the psychological complexity of his works. Chapter One features a biography of Dibdin Pitt, proving him to be at the lower end of a low-status profession. Chapter Two examines the Britannia Theatre, and Dibdin Pitt's contributions to that theatre, between 1844 and 1851. In Chapter Three, I will deal with Dibdin pitt's domestic melodramas, showing them to be, like other domestic melodramas of the period, politically conservative. Chapter Four explores anxiety dreams and trauma-induced dreams as they are presented in Dibdin pitt's Gothic melodramas and in other Gothic literature of the age. Chapter Five is concerned with Dibdin Pitt's military melodramas as they compare with Amherst's The Battle of Waterloo. In Chapter Six, I will concentrate on Dibdin pitt's nautical melodramas, comparing them with Jerrold's Black-Eyed Susan, and discussing Dibdin pitt's 2 oscillation between masculine and feminine portrayals of the Jack Tar. Chapter Seven will feature a discussion of Dibdin pitt's most famous crime melodrama (and perhaps the most famous crime melodrama of the period) The String of Pearls. In Chapter Eight, I will study the Gothic settings of Dibdin Pitt's two penny press novels The Sea-Fiend and The Wreck of the Heart. Chapter Nine will offer someconclusive remarks, demonstrating that the psychological complexities of Dibdin pitt's work have largely gone unnoticed or underestimated until recently. The second part of the dissertation is an annotated checklist of a broad cross-section of Dibdin Pitt's plays, listed alphabetically. Sub-genre, and date and venue of production, are noted in each entry
