Abstract:
This thesis describes the synthesis and characterization of novel Ni-Fe complexes as structural, spectroscopic and functional models for the active site of the [NiFe] hydrogenase. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the [NiFe] hydrogenase enzymes, including a description of the structure, spectroscopic and redox properties and the catalytic mechanisms proposed. A selection of Ni-Fe model compounds have been synthesized to provide insight into the structure and properties of the active site of the [NiFe] hydrogenase is reviewed. Polynuclear Ni-Fe compounds and Ni only complexes which display catalytic activity towards proton reduction or hydrogen activation are also discussed.
