Abstract:
This thesis investigates three fundamental aspects of the gauge principle and gauge invariance: their conceptual content, their objective content, and their metaphysical significance. The strategy of this work is to present first the foundational problems of gauge theories in the framework of electromagnetism and the Standard Model. In particular, it presents a discussion of the conceptual importance of the Aharonov-Bohm effect and the Higgs mechanism. These physical developments are then analysed from the point of view of Ontic Structural Realism and an alternative view denominated Transcendental Ontic Structuralism is developed.
