Abstract:
This thesis reports experimental and theoretical studies of the photophysics and photochemistry of various functionalised organic and organometallic molecules in the gas phase. These were carried out using a combination of high-level ab initio theoretical methods and two state-of the- art experimental techniques, namely Hydrogen (Rydberg) Atom Photofragment Translational Spectroscopy (HRA-PTS) and Velocity-Map Imaging (VMI) spectroscopy. The central aim of the thesis is to investigate the competition between the various decay pathways available to the excited state molecule and how such competition can be influenced by strategic chemical substitution or state-selective photo-excitation.
