Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate young people's current level of knowledge on Orthodontic treatment. A three stage approach was used (Hunt et al. , 1986). This involved carrying out focus groups to identify patients' understanding and needs from information sources on fixed Orthodontic treatment, creating a website about orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances, and finally testing the website via a questionnaire study. Two semi structured patient focus groups were held in July 2012 at Bristol Dental Hospital, Bristol, UK. The conversations were recorded and later transcribed and analysed. In total, six themes were identified from the focus groups, and these formed a framework for a new website on information about fixed appliances. The website created was written from a patient perspective. Its content reflects real life experiences of young people who are in the process of having orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances. The website is written in a format and contains quotes, pictures and videos that the young people felt were important for everyone to know about. A questionnaire was created based on the findings from the focus groups and was used to test the readability of the website. Patients at all stages of treatment were asked to participate in the questionnaire study. The results showed that it was well received and people felt it was an extremely valuable resource for young people who were undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment. Future work will involve developing the website into a fully functional smartphone app for patients.
