In recent years, Electron Spin Resonance has started to become less of an end in itself and more of a tool for the use of other disciplines. Such a development is inevitable and by no means unique. This thesis aims at trying to interpret ESR data on aqueous phenomena by reference to the perturbations in the spectra of a probe radical when solvent parameters are changed. No attempt has been made to review extensively the theory and practice of ESR since it is assumed that the reader will be conversant with the technique. However, a brief discussion of the common types of linewidth phenomena is given, together with a short section on current theories of water structure. Chapter 2 deals with the discovery of a new radical environment in water and the effects of anisotropic motion on the observed spectrum of di-tertiarybutyl nitroxide. Then goes on to describe how the ESR of radicals in critical solutions and micelle containing solutions can be studied, and gives some results as examples. The third chapter deals with the asymmetric solvation of the meta-dinitrobenzene radical anion in water, and shows how it is possible to utilise this property in the study of water structure. A short section is added describing the quest for a spectrum of the initiator radical found in the emulsion polymerisation process. Finally, many results are given concerning the spectra of nitroxide radicals in mixed solvents. An attempt has been made to interpret these results in the light of contemporary theories.
