Abstract: | |||||
This paper describes the study of a group of mothers who have completed a structured group intervention aimed at helping them cope with persistent relationship problems and behavioural problems which they were experiencing with their children. An evaluation of the mothers' construction of parenting and of herself was measured using Kelly's Personal Construct Grids. The Parenting Daily Hassles questionnaire which measures minor daily stresses experienced by most parents in routine interactions and tasks with their children and videotapes of the mothers interacting with their children were also used to give independent evidence of changes in parenting styles. This information was compared to a control group of mothers who had not completed the group. It is hypothesised that the mothers completing the group intervention will express personal constructs that are more fluid, thereby revealing their changing constructions of parenting and themselves and what it means to them to be a parent. This will also be reflected in the independent measures as the quality of the mothers' interactions with their children improves and less 'daily hassles' are reported.
