Abstract:
The increased dependence of organisations on data communications has given rise to a demand to interconnect LANs both at the same site and at geographically remote sites. To meet this demand metropolitan area networks (MANs) are being developed. Currently, the only standardised medium access control (MAC) protocol for MANs is the DQDB MAC protocol for MAN subnetworks. It is perceived, that national geographical coverage will be provided by interconnecting DQDB MANs either by high bit rate digital circuits or, in the future, by the B-ISDN. DQDB therefore, has been designed to be ATM compatible and hence has the potential to support the multi-media services that the B-ISDN will support. This means therefore, that DQDB MANs must be capable of supporting efficient transmission of prioritised traffic, to meet the different quality of service requirements of these services, at high transmission rates and over large geographical areas. Earlier research relating to the operation of DQDB has identified problems with the priority control method used when operating with high bit rates and over large geographical areas. The aim of the research reported in this thesis, therefore, has been to propose and evaluate alternative schemes for prioritised access to large high-speed DQDB MANs. The research carried out includes:- a performance evaluation of the broadcast and non-broadcast modes of transmission; a new multiple-segment queuing scheme which may be dynamically selected based on the requested priority parameter of a message; a new priority scheme which enables the restriction on the length of current DQDB networks for the effective support of multiple priorities to be lifted; a performance evaluation of a prioritised multiple-segment queuing scheme for the effective transmission of large prioritised messages.
