Abstract:
A survey is made of the level of genetic variation found at enzyme loci in natural populations of a large number of species of marine bryozoans. The variation is examined for possible correlations with environmental variables and ecological parameters. The taxonomy of the ctenostome bryozoan genus Alcyonidium Lamaroux is investigated in some detail by establishing the probability of genetic flow between gene pools. Enzyme electrophoresis is used to show that some so called "species" consist of separate populations which maintain reproductive isolation. The taxonomic position of some doubtful species is also clarified. The species investigated are Alcyonidium hirsutum (Fleming), A. polyoum (Hassall), A. variegatum Prouho, A. mytili Dalyell, A. gelatinosum (Linnaeus) and A. proliferans Lacourt. A further taxonomic investigation is made, again using enzyme electrophoresis, in the cheilostome bryozoan genus Schizomavella. The species concerned are S. linearis (Hassall), S. auriculata(Hassall) and S. hastata Hincks. An examination is made of the potential usefulness of tentacle number as an aid to taxonomy in Bryozoa. There are also brief studies of intracolonial variation and intercolonial and intracolonial fusion in bryozoans and of the settlement of larvae and the growth of bryozoan colonies under laboratory conditions.
