This investigation considers speech detection based upon the digital measurement of characteristics of the speech waveform. All measurements were obtained with speech band limited from 300Hz to 3400Hz. The performance of the conventional analogue detector is assessed and its performance used as a basis for comparison with subsequent digital methods. Speech characteristics were investigated under the headings of absolute amplitude, amplitude rate of change, mean zero crossing rate, zero crossing probability, adjacent segment convariance and spectral balance. On the basis of the results obtained, a digital speech detector was designed and its performance shown to offer improvements over contemporary detection.
