Chapter 1 contains a review of the general uses of selenium and tellurium in chemistry. There is also a review of methyl and trimethylsilyl substituted cyclopentadienes in organometallic chemistry. Chapter 2 describes the synthesis and characterisation of the novel bis(cyclopentadienyl)selenium compounds (C5Me4H)2Se, (C5{SiMe3}2H3)2Se, (C5{SiMe3}3H2)2Se and [W(CO)5{Se(C5{SiMe3}3H2)2}]. The x-ray crystal structure of bis(tetramethylcyclopentadienyl)selenium is discussed. Chapter 3 is concerned with the reactions of some cyclopentadienylselenolate anions. The products include an unexpected tricyclic selenium compound, whose x-ray crystal structure was determined and its sulfur analogue. Chapter 4 reports the reactions of some bis(cyclopentadienyl)selenium compounds with selected electrophiles. The reactions with alkyl halides and transition metal carbonyl halides compounds were generally found to lead to C-Se bond cleavage and formation of polyselenides. Chapter 5 discusses the reactions of some bis(cyclopentadienyl)selenium compounds with a selection of group 8 and 9 transition metal carbonyl clusters. Chapter 6 contains a preliminary study of some selenium-containing compounds using Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). The results are discussed in the context of their suitability as precursors for CVD. Cyclopentadienylselenium compounds in particular decompose cleanly at moderate temperatures to give elemental selenium.
