Abstract:
In an investigation of the factors controlling seed germination and seedling establishment in sand-dune plants, six species were studied. Three were winter annuals, two were biennials or short-lived perennials, and one was a long-lived perennial. All were studied both in their natural habitats on sand-dune systems in South Wales and in the laboratory. Germination tests were carried out on seeds collected in the field to determine the effects of physical factors (temperature, light conditions and moisture levels) and chemical and biotic factors (salinity, phytochemicals and fungal infection) on germination and seedling growth in each species. The effects on germination behaviour of ageing and a range of pretreatments including subjecting the seeds to extreme conditions (very high or very low temperatures, and osmotic stress) were also studied. In addition, the extent to which seeds from different populations, from different individual plants, from different positions on a single plant or of different size classes within a population differ in germination behaviour was investigated. Special attention was given to the possible role of allelopathic effects on germination and seedling growth produced by phytochemicals originating from plants present on the sand-dunes, including mosses and lichens. In general, the species showed considerable similarities in germination behaviour, the optimum conditions usually being similar to those under which germination could be observed in the field, but there were significant differences between the species in response to pretreatments and after-ripening, and in response to extreme conditions and biotic factors. Significant intraspecific differences in germination behaviour between populations or between different classes of seeds were also found in some cases.
