The design and performance of different types of optoacoustic spectrometers is reported. These are: a microprocessor assisted singlebeam recording optoacoustic spectrometer for solid or gaseous samples; a non-recording single beam optoacoustic spectrometer for quantitative measurements; and a non-dispersive optoacoustic spectrometer for thickness measurements. The recording spectrometer was used in the visible and near-infrared regions to provide spectral data of one- and two-layer solid sample systems, including polymer systems. The optoacoustic layering effect is considered and a novel method of thickness measurements is introduced. Cell parameter variations are also considered with a view to maximising the optoacoustic signal.
