The production and utilisation of carbanions is now essential for the practice of organic synthesis. The stability conferred on an alkyl carbanion by the presence of an α-boryl group is well known within organic chemistry. It has been proposed that an alkenyl carbanion would also be stabilised by an α-boryl group. This supposition has recently been supported by the publication of calculations concerning the stability of a-carbanions stabilised by the presence of first row elements. This thesis presents the first unequivocal syntheses of a new class of boron compounds, boron stabilised α-alkenyl carbanions, by the use of hindered boranes. The reactions of these carbanions with a range of electrophiles are investigated, and techniques are developed for new syntheses of aldehydes, ketones and allenes. The reactions of the carbanions with some other electrophiles are also investigated.
