This case study shows how the most densely populated county in Wales struggled to provide educational accommodation for its burgeoning population. Glamorgan was transformed into an industrial gain of the first rank during the nineteenth century, but educational provision was meagre and insignificant at the start of that century. The early 1840s was a turning-point in the history of education. The 1847 Report on Education shows that little progress had been made in educational provision in industrial Glamorgan but the work of Nefydd throughout the 1850s led to the establishment of many British Schools. The important Dowlais Works Schools are considered, as well as educational provision throughout the 1860s. The 1870 Education Act established School Boards in industrial Glamorgan. This 'Payment by Results' era has some significance with regard to the present fixed National Curriculum. The way in which the 1902 Act ended the School Boards is illustrated. Chapter Four refers to the Advanced elementary education provided in industrial Glamorgan, together with the Science and Art Department work that was offered, and the evening class work. The changed situation after the Cockerton Judgement of 1900-1 is described. Secondary Education is surveyed, from the only two classical schools in the country to the schools established by the Welsh Intermediate Education Act of 1889. The impact of the 1902 Act is considered and the subsequent development of Municipal Secondary schools, which created a dual system of secondary education in the county. The proposed Reorganisation of the 1920s was curtailed in the 1930s, because of the Depression. Post-war Reconstruction saw industrial Glamorgan adopt the tripartite system, rather than multilateralism. Industrial Glamorgan is unique in the history of education in Wales. Its inhabitants were proud of their educational achievements. However, during the present century, the school system was absorbed into the English model.
