In recent years, we have seen a substantial increase of interest in depth of word knowledge. The idea that vocabulary knowledge extends far beyond semantic meaning is essential to our understanding of L2 lexical competence. Yet, there are still several obstacles we need to overcome if we hope to gain a greater insight into the role depth of word knowledge plays for L2 acquisition and L2 performance. One problem is a lack of quality depth of word knowledge tests. Another problem is that we do not have any agreed upon model to describe how depth of word knowledge interacts with other types of lexical knowledge. The primary goal of this thesis is to develop a new test for depth of word knowledge. In particular, I will describe the development and trialling of a test called V Links (vocabulary links). The secondary goal is to address some of the broader issues related to depth of word knowledge. In particular, I will consider how depth of word knowledge should be conceptualized, and the implications this has for developing holistic models of lexical competence.
