Section 1 of this thesis contains a review of carbanion chemistry with particular emphasis on carbon-carbon bond formation. Section 2 reports the results of a study on the synthetic applications of 4-alkyldimesitylboranos. It is shown that those boranes may be readily doprotonated to produce anions a- to boron. Homologated alcohols may be produced by the sequential alkylation and oxidation of these anions. Largely unsuccessful attempts to produce ketones, esters and carboxylic acids via acylation of the anions are discussed. Finally, the results of preliminary studies on those reactions of li-nlkyldimositylboranes not involving boron-stabilised carbanions are presented.
