Abstract:
This thesis describes an experimental investigation of collision processes in negative ion/electron swarms in oxygen and carbon dioxide. The processes were studied by measuring the growth of pre-breakdown ionization currents, as a function of electrode separation, in an apparatus in which the initiatory current comprised negative ions. The experiments were carried out using values of E/p (electric field/gas pressure) and p in the ranges 35-60 Vcm-I torr 1 and 10-100 torr respectively. The results indicate that the growth of the currents may be represented by a modified form of the Townsend equation in which ionization, attachment and detachment are taken into consideration.
