The well established pyrolysis of n-butane in a quartz reactor, has been reinvestigated in the low conversion regions, using a flow system incorporating a spiral reactor of large volume. Having established most of the details unearthed by Purnell and Quinn, Sagert and Laidler etc. in the period 1961-66 we proceeded to accurately investigate the relatively obscure regions of high conversion (up to 90%) again in the same system. The data generated proved to be reliable in terms of reproducibility, and the observation of some secondary effects noted in a preliminary investigation by V. Illes. The project continued with a computer simulation of the flow pyrolysis, using a program designed in 1970 by P.D. Paoey. Discrepancies between computed and experimental data proved to be factors of both the mechanism and the Arrhenius parameters, chosen to describe the complete pyrolysis. The most serious disagreement however, arose in the exact determination of residence times within the reactor (especially at high conversion), and resolution of this problem necessitated modifications to the existing program, to predict the true occurrences within the reactor. The results obtained with this program were very successful and emphasised the role of computers in the solution of complex chemical kinetics.
