Overview: This thesis consists of three parts: a literature review (part 1), an empirical paper (part 2) and a critical appraisal of the research (part 3). Part 1 reviews the literature describing and evaluating different types of Hearing Voices Groups (HVGs). It then evaluates the existing evidence for possible predictors and mechanisms of change in HVGs and suggests paths for future research. Part 2 describes an independent piece of clinical research consisting of two studies exploring the mechanisms of change in HVGs for clients with schizophrenia. Study 1 uses path analysis on existing data to model possible causal relationships between distress and negative beliefs about voices, before exploring the moderating effects of HVGs. Study 2 describes a case series of 15 participants from three new HVGs. Measures are taken each session to explore the relationships between key outcome variables over time. The results of both studies are discussed in light of predictions from cognitive theory, outlining implications for the future running of HVGs and process research. Part 3 offers a critical account of the research carried out for the empirical paper. It includes the basis for choosing the study, the rationale behind key decisions and how challenges were overcome. It also reflects on the merits and limitations of the chosen methodological approaches and the potential value of HVGs.
