Abstract:
Chapter 3 reports N,N-bidentate organozincamide and zinc(bis)amide compounds, as precursors to both lithium zincates and to polyhedral lithum amide clusters. Reaction of ZnMe2 with each of the N’,N’-chelating ligands Ph(2-C5H4N)NH, Cy(2-C5H4N)NH, (p-Tol)(2-C5H4N)NH and hppH (1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-2H-pyrimido[1,2-a]pyrimidine) affords species of the types ZnLMe, ZnL2, and ZnL2.(ZnLMe)2. Chapter 4 probes the in situ exposure of the diorganozinc compounds to Lun/tBu in order to afford heterobimetallic zincate complexes. Subsequent exposure of these species to molecular oxygen affords products that support the formerly postulated oxygen-scavenging nature of lithium zincates. Chapter 5 investigates the generality of the formation of novel hydridic clusters of the type [Li8(H)R6]+ (R = N-2-pyridylanilide/amide or guanidinate). The synthesis of these compounds is neither restricted to the use of aromatic ligand precursors or organoaluminium substrates but can be extended to non-aromatic N,N’-chelating ligands and both alternative group 13 and group 12 organometallic substrates.
