Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to form a historical framework for the relationship between the regional divisions and the tribes in North Yemen (the former Yemen Arab Republic before the unity of two the Yemens, 1962-90). The main body of this thesis consists of three parts, the recent relationship between the tribal structure and the structure of the regional divisions in the Yemen Arab Republic, the history of the Yemeni traditional and indigenous regional divisions, mikhlaf and cuzlah, in medieval times and the process of the change from the traditional to modern regional divisions since the introduction of the rural administrative divisions in the second Ottoman occupation (1872-1918).
