Abstract:
This investigation was carried out with the purpose of studying the decomposition of 11gnin by fungi, particularly soil fungi, although some wood-rotting forms were included. Since no satisfactory techniques were available for isolating and estimating liguin, most of the work was based on studies of the physiology of the fungi on compounds known to be related to lignin. The decomposition of unchanged 11gnin was studied briefly by an investigation of the products related from sawdust following attack by fungi. A combination of growth and Warburg experiments, and of analyses by spectrochemistry and paper chromatography, was used throughout.
