Abstract:
The work which lias been described in this thesis was undertaken in an attempt to discover something further about the nature of cosmic ray particles, and the Wilson cloud chamber was used to investigate the behaviour of these particles in passing through matter. In Oh.II the experimental arrangement is described, and in Oh.Ill the known possible method of energy loss by particles with cosmic energies are discussed, together with some experimental observations by the author. About two years ago it became apparent that an hitherto unknown particle, the mesotron, was present in cosmic rays besides the positive and negative electrons and the proton, and some results obtained by Dr. E.J. Williams and the author at Liverpool University furnished striking confirmation of this, and gave a fairly reliable value for the mass of the mesotron. These results have been described in Ch.Ill together with further results obtained by the author at ! Aberdeen. Some results obtained relating to the possible spontaneous disintegration and also the origin of the mesotron are also described, and finally, the author has indicated several'possibilities for future research work on cosmic rays.
