Abstract:
In their account of the vascular plants of the Rhynie chert, Kidston and Lang (1917-21) recorded the general appearance and average size of the spores which they found in ground sections of sporangia. Those of Rhynia gwynne-vaughani were given as ca.40u, those of Horneophyton lignieri as ca.50u, while the spores of Rhynia major and those provisionally regarded as belonging to Asteroxylon mackiei, (since transferred to Nothia aphylla Lyon 1964) were stated to be ca. 65u and 64u respectively, the latter having a distinctive golden yellow colour.
