Abstract:
Serotonin or 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT) is a key neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain. Numerous physiological and pathological processes have been associated with the central 5HT system but many aspects of its physiology remain enigmatic. The ability to specifically manipulate central 5HT neurones is highly attractive, and new research tools are required to extend our understanding of their functions. With their unique features, novel lenti- and adenoviral vectors can be potentially useful to selectively drive transgene expression in brainstem 5HT neurones.
