Abstract:
This thesis combines the disciplines of science and economics to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of managed realignment projects, through which some sea defences are breached and the land flooded, realised at an estuary scale level. In the face of climate change effects, the UK government is reorientating its coastal management strategy with a view to increasing its flexibility and adaptability. On the east coast, this policy switch has included a series of managed realignment projects. These projects result in the restoration of salt marshes that, as well as providing a more sustainable flood defence, create opportunities for biodiversity enhancement, and amenity and recreation.
