Abstract:
The functional response (i.e. the relationship between the available density of an animal's prey and the animal's feeding rate) is typically modelled as some function of the behavioural parameters handling time and searching efficiency. An understanding of the functional responses of coastal wading birds (Charadriiformes) has allowed the use of behaviour-based models for prediction of the responses of these birds to environmental change. An understanding of the behavioural parameters underlying functional response models, should lead to the prediction of functional responses, and ultimately behaviour-based modelling, for previously unmodelled species.
