Abstract:
The films directed by Emiiio Fernandez during the so-called Golden Age of Mexican cinema, it has been argued, constitute the culmination of the country's nationalist filmmaking tradition. The fact that Fernandez has been consecrated in Mexico as a great national artist, and that his work has been institutionalised as a key part of the nation's cultural heritage, has made it particularly necessary to investigate the ideological of his cinema. This thesis contributes to this line of research by approaching some of his 1940s films through a close textual analysis that studies the specificities of cinematic composition.
