Abstract:
This thesis is separated into two investigations, both involving models written as a series of chemical reactions, modelled by the master equation and simulated with the Gillespie algorithm. In the first, the van Kampen system-size expansion is used to model the temporal correlations of linear fluctuations about ensemble-average behaviour. For the forced point of the discrete Brusselator model, this is carried out through known techniques. These have been extended and implemented in the description of fluctuations about limit cycles. In the second investigation, a discrete and stochastic version of the Webworld model of food webs is derived and demonstrated.
