Abstract:
This thesis investigates the frequent labelling of Catalan directors Jose Luis Guerin and Marc Recha as foreign or de-territorialised. Investigating the interstitial, liminal and marginal spaces that they occupy, it examines Guerin's Tren de somhras ('Train of Shadows', 1997) and En construccion ('Work in Progress', 2001) alongside Recha's Pau i el seu germa ('Pau and his Brother', 2001) and Les mans buides ('Where is Madame Catherine?', 2003). In light of the emergence of an 'accented voice within Catalan literature in the form of female author Najat el Hachmi, this work is timely because it addresses the alternative and hybrid cinematic language established by two native filmakers who are simultaneously local and foreign.
