Abstract:
Scientific data returned by the Galileo spacecraft and ground-based measurements have allowed me to revise Io's crust conductive heat loss to be nearly 5% of the total heat loss, rather than the 75% suggested by previous author; the main leat loss, 95% of the total is volcanic. A new estimate of the globally averaged lothermal gradient has been set to 39K/km in contrast to the post-Voyager estimate of 200K/km. The detection of high-temperature eruptions by Galileo has strengthened. Evidence for the importance of silicates in lo's magmatism and led me to a new modelling of lo's crust in which magma reservoirs are shown to be very likely to form at depths between 29 and 16 km.
