Abstract:
Community development in Cuba has taken a new direction, one which encompasses ideas about decentralised participatory development. Literature on these changes, and the organisations which are part of it, is marked by a lack of ethnographic description, by a tendency to prescribe not describe, and by assumptions about the positive nature of participatory development. On the contrary anthropological literature on development. and in particular participatory development, has highlighted a number of critical perspectives on both organisations and processes. This thesis reconsiders Cuban community development in light of the anthropological critiques, thereby making a significant contribution to both anthropological debates on development and on the state, and to Cuban debates on the post-1990s changes.
