Abstract:
The trigeminal subnucleus caudalis is a region of the brain stem anatomically suited for the study of pain signalling and its processing within the central nervous system. The excitability of these second order neurones is the major determinant for the propagation of trigeminal nociceptive signals to the brain. Long-term changes to the activity of cells in the caudalis are thought to underlie pain pathologies that are specific to the trigeminal sensory system, such as migraine and trigeminal neuralgia.
