Abstract:
This study investigates the oral communication problems and strategies of Japanese university EFL learners, using the retrospective verbal report technique. Thirty-two students, roughly at an intermediate level of English proficiency, participated in the study. Interaction data were elicited through video-recorded one-to-one face-to-face coral proficiency interviews, each between a learner and a NS interlocutor-assessor. The video-recording was then used as a prompt in the subsequent retrospective verbal report sessions, in which the participants verbalised their mental experiences about communication problems and strategies during the interaction.
