Abstract:
There is no ideal questionnaire to detect emotional disorders in adolescent medical outpatients. Such disorders have significant consequences and few patients get correctly identified or referred. Currently the Mood and Feelings Questionnaire and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale are the best potential screening tools, with the best concurrent criterion measured using the Child Assessment Schedule. A descriptive diagnostic cohort study design was used for the HADS and MFQ questionnaires validation. 158 consecutive medical outpatients aged 12-16 in one district general hospital were approached. 95 completed all aspects of the main study with an entirely separate stratified sample of 20 patients for the acceptability evaluation. The interviewer was blind to questionnaire results. A newly-devised questionnaire to measure acceptability and a small-group teaching approach to set clinician-derived psychometric standards are described.
