Abstract:
This dissertation offers an examination of the way in which metaphors of biology entered into the critical discourse that surrounded the emergence of the 'new abstraction' in England during the 1930s. It seeks to explore, in particular, the usage of biological ideas by aestheticians by charting how conceptual shifts in biology corresponded with analogous shifts in aesthetics at this time.
