Abstract:
A brief historical review of the Cyperaceae with an emphasis on the historical classification of the Carex flava L agg. is given. Within the C. flava agg. the highly polymorphic taxon C. viridula sensu Schid has been the most problematic, Multivariate statistical analyses of 11 morphometric characters and allozyme analyses of 17 putative loci derived from several segregates of C. viridula sensu Schmid were examined in order to ascertain their taxonomic identity. These reveal that the current taxonomy most commonly used in the British Isles and North America to be incorrect Therefore the polymorphic C. viridula sensu Schmid should be recognized as three distinct species; C. viridula sensu Michx; C. lepidocarpa Tausch. and C. demissa Hornem.
