Abstract:
In a healthy individual the total mass of pancreatic β-cells remains fairly constant throughout adult life. However, rather than being static, the population of β-cells is dynamic, with a low level of cell loss being counteracted by a similar rate of new β-cells being created. The exact mechanism by which β-cells are generated is still a matter of investigation and interest.
