Abstract:
An estimated 529,000 women die annually from pregnancy, childbirth and related causes (maternal mortality) and as many as 15 times more suffer injury or infection (maternal morbidity). Most of these deaths and disabilities occur to women in developing countries, where pregnancy and childbirth are among the leading causes of death for women of childbearing age and where the risk of death is 50 to 100 times more than in developed countries.
