Abstract:
Long term depression (LTD) in area CAl of the hippocampus can be induced by activating group I metabotropic receptors (mGluRs) by applying the specific agonist DHPG (DHPG-induced LTD). There is controversy surrounding the mechanisms by which DHPG-induced LTD occurs however. Evidence exists suggesting that it is expressed as a pre-synaptic change and also that it is expressed as a post-synaptic change. The post-synaptic change suggested to be responsible is redistribution of synaptic AMPA receptors.
