Abstract:
Non-covalent modification of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) has become attractive recently, since covalent modification has the disadvantage that it may impair physical properities of SWNTs. The work described in this thesis utilised cholic acid and chenodeoxycholic acid as starting materials to synthesise a family of oligomeric macrocycles featuring hydrophilic exteriors and hydrophobic interiors, which may find application for solubilisation of hydrophobic molecules such as SWNTs in polar solvents.
