Abstract:
In the eleventh century, an interiorisation of spirituality prompted certain monks to question their spiritual role, especially in relation to the outside world. This problem has been repeatedly addressed by historians in recent years, yet still Damian's important place withm this crucial debate on monastic ideology has not been fully explored. Ihis thesis seelcs to examme certain important letters and works of Peter Damian, who manipulated the tensions present it in eleventh-century monasticism in order to uispire more monks to pursue an eremitical career.
